118. The Principles of Discerning When Evil Spirits Are Trying to Deceive People
1. If anyone tries to pass themselves off as Christ or as an angel, and they are always telling lies and they do not conform to God’s words at all, then they are an evil spirit trying to deceive people;
2. Whosoever declares themselves God’s beloved son, firstborn son, an angel, or a prophet come to speak and work, who speaks words that seem true but are actually false, is an evil spirit trying to deceive people;
3. All those whose understanding abilities are of extraordinary absurdities, who always propagate heresies and fallacies, who distort facts and deny God’s work, are evil spirits trying to deceive people;
4. All those who focus on the supernatural, who say they often hear voices and see visions, who can know and point out the sins of others and perform miracles and wonders, are evil spirits trying to deceive people.
Relevant Words of God:
There are some who are possessed by evil spirits and persistently cry out, “I am God!” Yet in the end, they cannot remain standing, for they act on behalf of the wrong being. They represent Satan and the Holy Spirit pays them no attention. However highly you exalt yourself or however strongly you cry out, you are still a created being and one that belongs to Satan. I never cry out, “I am God, I am the beloved Son of God!” But the work I do is God’s work. Need I shout? There is no need for exaltation. God does His work Himself and does not need for man to accord Him a status or honorific title, and His work is sufficient to represent His identity and status. Prior to His baptism, was not Jesus God Himself? Was He not the incarnate flesh of God? Surely it cannot be said that He became the only Son of God only after He was testified to? Was there not a man by the name of Jesus long before He began His work? You cannot bring forth new paths or represent the Spirit. You cannot express the work of the Spirit or the words that He speaks. You cannot do the work of God Himself or that of the Spirit. You cannot express the wisdom, wonder, and unfathomableness of God, or all the disposition by which God chastises man. So your repeated claims to be God do not matter; you have only the name and none of the substance. God Himself has come, but none recognize Him, yet He continues on in His work and does so in representation of the Spirit. Whether you call Him man or God, the Lord or Christ, or call Her sister, it is all right. But the work He does is that of the Spirit and represents the work of God Himself. He does not care about the name by which man calls Him. Can that name determine His work? Regardless of what you call Him, from the perspective of God, He is the incarnate flesh of the Spirit of God; He represents the Spirit and is approved by Him. You cannot make way for a new age, and you cannot bring the old to an end and cannot usher in a new age or do new work. Therefore, you cannot be called God!
from “The Mystery of the Incarnation (1)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
When Satan tempted Eve, it said: “Why don’t you eat the fruit on that tree?” Eve answered, “God said that if I eat that tree’s fruit, I will die.” Satan then said, “You won’t necessarily die if you eat the fruit from that tree.” The intention of this statement of Satan’s was to tempt; it did not say for sure that by eating the fruit from the tree man wouldn’t die, it just said that man wouldn’t necessarily die, and this caused man to think: “If I won’t necessarily die, it should be fine to eat it.” Man could not resist the temptation to eat the fruit. In this way, Satan reached its goal of tempting man into committing a sin; it did not take responsibility, because it did not force anyone to eat it. Now all people have within them the poisons of Satan which test God and tempt man. Sometimes when people speak they speak in the tones of Satan, with the intention to test and tempt. All the thoughts and ideas that fill people are the poisons of Satan, the manner they bear is a thing of Satan, and sometimes a wink or gesture carries a whiff of testing and temptation.
from “Those Who Have Lost the Work of the Holy Spirit Are Most at Risk” in Records of Christ’s Talks
Certainly, today there are some evil spirits who work through supernatural things to deceive man; that is nothing but imitation on their part, to deceive man through work that is not presently done by the Holy Spirit. Many evil spirits imitate the working of miracles and healing of sickness; they are nothing but the work of the evil spirits, for the Holy Spirit no longer does such work in present day. All those afterward who imitate the work of the Holy Spirit—they are evil spirits. All the work carried out in Israel at the time was that of the supernatural. However, the Holy Spirit does not now work in such manner, and any such work that follows is the doing and disturbance of Satan and of evil spirits. But you cannot say that all of the supernatural is the doing of the evil spirits. This depends on the age of God’s work.
from “The Mystery of the Incarnation (1)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
If, during the present day, there is to emerge a person who is able to display signs and wonders, and can cast out demons, and heal the sick, and perform many miracles, and if this person claims that they are the coming of Jesus, then this would be the counterfeit of evil spirits, and their imitation of Jesus. Remember this! God does not repeat the same work. Jesus’ stage of work has already been completed, and God will never again undertake that stage of work. The work of God is irreconcilable with the conceptions of man; for example, the Old Testament foretold the coming of a Messiah, but it turned out that Jesus came, so it would be wrong for another Messiah to come again. Jesus has already come once, and it would be wrong if Jesus were to come again this time. There is one name for every age, and each name is characterized by the age. In the conceptions of man, God must always display signs and wonders, must always heal the sick and cast out demons, and must always be just like Jesus, yet this time God is not like that at all. If, during the last days, God still displayed signs and wonders, and still cast out demons and healed the sick—if He did exactly the same as Jesus—then God would be repeating the same work, and the work of Jesus would have no significance or value. Thus, God carries out one stage of work in every age. Once each stage of His work has been completed, it is soon imitated by evil spirits, and after Satan begins to follow on the heels of God, God changes to a different method; once God has completed a stage of His work, it is imitated by evil spirits. You must be clear about these things.
from “Knowing God’s Work Today” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
Some people say that the Holy Spirit is working in them at all times. This is impossible. If they were to say that the Holy Spirit is always with them, that would be realistic. If they were to say that their thinking and sense are normal at all times, that would also be realistic, and would show that the Holy Spirit is with them. If you say the Holy Spirit is always working within you, that you are enlightened by God and touched by the Holy Spirit at every moment, and gain new knowledge all the time, then this is not normal. It is extremely supernatural! Without a shadow of a doubt, such people are evil spirits! Even when the Spirit of God comes into the flesh, there are times when He must rest, and must eat—to say nothing of you. Those who have been possessed by evil spirits seem to be without the weakness of the flesh. They are able to forsake and give up everything, they are dispassionate, capable of enduring torment, they do not feel the slightest fatigue, as if they have transcended the flesh. Is this not extremely supernatural? The work of the evil spirit is supernatural, and these things are unattainable by man. Those who cannot differentiate are envious when they see such people, and say that their belief in God is so strong, and so good, and that they are never weak. In fact, this is the manifestation of the work of the evil spirit. That is because people of a normal state inevitably have human weaknesses; this is the normal state of those who have the presence of the Holy Spirit.
from “Practice (4)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh
The Man’s Fellowship:
Anyone who impersonates Christ’s words to deceive people is a false Christ. All false Christs are possessed by evil spirits and speak to deceive people. How should you distinguish a false Christ who keeps speaking to deceive people? If you merely look at some of the false Christ’s words, you would scratch your head and be unable to see through what the evil spirit actually wants to do. If you continue to track this evil spirit and consider everything that it has said, it is very easy to see what it actually is, what it is doing, what it is actually saying, what it is plotting to do to people and what path it is offering people—these things will make it very easy to discern this evil spirit. We see many of the same characteristics in the things evil spirits say. They can only imitate God’s words, but cannot capture the essence of God’s words. God’s words have a context and a purpose. The eventual purpose and effect of God’s utterances is very clear and you can see the authority and the power in God’s words. They can touch one’s heart and move one’s soul. But the words of evil spirits and Satan have no context and no effect. They are like a pool of stagnant water. People feel dull in their hearts after reading them and nothing can be achieved. So evil spirits of all kinds do not hold any truths and are certainly murky and dark inside. Their words cannot bring people light and cannot show people the path they should follow. The evil spirits do not say clearly what their purpose is nor what they are putting across and there is no mention of anything related to the essence and root of the truth. Almost none. Nothing that people should understand or get can be found in the words of evil spirits. Therefore, the words of evil spirits can only confuse people and make people murky and dark inside. They cannot supply people with anything. From this we can see that the inherent nature of evil spirits is evil and dark. They have no life but are full of the breath of death. They are indeed negative and should be cursed. There is no truth at all in the speech of evil spirits. It is complete nonsense and makes people feel nauseous, disgusted and like vomiting, as if they have eaten dead flies. If people are in pursuit of the truth and possess the aptitude to receive God’s words, they will distinguish the words of evil spirits after reading them. Those who do not understand spiritual matters and do not have the ability to receive the words of God will certainly be confused by the words of evil spirits. All those people whom the Holy Spirit has enlightened and illuminated, who have an understanding of God’s words and who understand some truths will naturally distinguish the evil spirits’ lies. They will be able to see that there is no truth in any words spoken by evil spirits. They do not have what God has and is, nor do they have the slightest power or authority. Their words are a world of difference from God’s words. To use a more appropriate metaphor, the words of evil spirits are almost the same in nature as the words of an unreasonable fellow who possesses no truths. They are purely a pack of lies and nonsense.
from “How to Discern the Demonic Speech and Fallacies of Evil Spirits, False Christs and Antichrists” in Selected Annals of the Work Arrangements of The Church of Almighty God
Evil spirits and false Christs appear everywhere, and all attempt to build themselves up as God or the firstborn son of God, claiming that they are the firstborn son of God, God’s person, or the inheritor of God’s work, or that their actions were entrusted to them by God, that they are continuing God’s work on behalf of God, that they have come to do the work of perfecting people, that they are God incarnate come to do the work of perfecting mankind. They even shamelessly claim that God has departed and left His work to them, and they demand that others follow them. Such people are truly in the height of arrogance. If we investigate their background, we discover most are the promiscuous or possessed by evil spirits, all of whom have been cleaned out and expelled. They lack any humanity, have no life experience to speak of, and possess even less truth, they can only speak words and doctrine to deceive the foolish, ignorant, and undiscerning. … Some ambitious people who have just entered the church burn so with longing that their beastly nature emerges, and they cannot help but step forward and claim to be Christ or exalt themselves as the firstborn son of God or God’s person. If these are not evil spirits, what are they? Could anyone with reason do such ridiculous things? These people are purely devils, evil spirits, and beasts, and deserve to be cursed.

All put forth by false Christs are lies and rumors, all confuse black with white and right with wrong. These devils are despicable and shameless to the utmost! To achieve their ends, they deliberately misinterpret God’s word, quote it out of context, re-edit it and piece it together, and plagiarize the man’s fellowship, and then add on their own absurd interpretations and fabrications, and claim the authorship of these things, which are nothing but books full of fallacies to deceive others. They also spread their absurdities and lies everywhere. They are truly shameless.
from the fellowship from the above
The group of false Christs and antichrists is comprised of devils who mixed into God’s house but were later revealed and expelled. They do not have a heart that fears God, nor do they have any practical experience, they lack all knowledge of God’s work, and they have no testimony of life experience. These devils, for the despicable goal of controlling God’s chosen people, have carefully written several notorious volumes—The Words in the Words, Guide to the Millennial Kingdom, The Divine Path, The Work of Discernment, The Secrets Within the Secrets. Just looking at the names of these books makes one realize they are ridiculous and laughable. They do not match the vocabulary of the truth at all, and their content is unquestionably nothing but absurd theories and lies, not even worthy of refuting. The Secrets Within the Secrets and The Words in the Words repeat terms in their titles, which reveals the deceit and foolishness of Satan. It is obvious that they are books full of heresies and absurdities. Only the work of evil spirits could create such imitation and falsity. We can see that this group of devils has conspired long and comes prepared, that they have no intention to cease their disturbances, and that they are nothing but an experienced group of religious conmen. Everything they say is a lie, and the books compiled by them through pirating, extracting, and plagiarizing are nothing but tools to deceive people.
from the fellowship from the above
Following each stage of God’s work, there are all kinds of evil spirits that imitate and fake the work of the Holy Spirit. Satan deceives people by making people “speak in tongues,” “see visions,” “have revelations,” etc., so as to make God’s chosen people deviate from the true way. Speaking in tongues, seeing visions and hearing voices are classified as the work of evil spirits. This is undoubtable. What is “speaking in tongues”? It is speaking a type of “language” that no one understands whilst in prayer. This is so-called speaking in tongues. If someone speaks in a way that is not classified as any language, but the tongue rolls in a way that the words are not clear, then this is a result of the work of evil spirits. “Seeing visions” means that a person, with his eyes open, is able to see something which normal people cannot see, or some strange phenomena. This is a type of phenomenon of the work of evil spirits. … When I believed in the Lord Jesus in the Age of Grace, I came into contact with some people who often spoke in tongues. Their later outcomes were all very tragic. Some were possessed by demons, some had mental health problems and the majority of them collapsed in the end. All those possessed by demons do not have good outcomes. This is absolute. Therefore, it can be determined that speaking in tongues, seeing visions and hearing voices are entirely the work of evil spirits. It is the evil spirits imitating and faking the Holy Spirit’s work. This must be seen clearly.
