This Spring Festival, I went back home. That day, my relatives and I sat chatting together, very happily. One of them said, “My newly-opened factory badly needs an accountant. It is only trustworthy to engage a person like you, sister.” Another said, “The orchard I’ve now contracted for is short of a manager. Come and help me, and you’ll get preferential treatment.” Still another said, “Sister, if you join us, surely you will make a fortune. Not only will your belief in God not be hindered, but you can make much money to contribute and do good deeds. That will be complete in both respects. Why not go ahead with it?” At these words, my heart was tempted. I thought, “Where else can I find so many good opportunities to earn money? Besides, I have been performing my duty away from home for years, and my money is nearly gone. If my money is really run out, how will I live my life in the future? But, if I promise to earn money, am I not forsaking God?” I was in a dilemma, neither wanting to forsake God nor wanting to miss this road for gaining money. So, I said slickly, “I can’t promise you now. But I’ll think it over. Leave me your phone numbers, so I can contact you later when necessary.” In this way, I declined their offers for the moment.
The next day, I returned to God’s family to perform my duty. For several days, however, I could not be quiet. I was so disturbed by the matter of earning money that I was always upset and restless and could not put my heart into performing my duty. I completely fell under satan’s power of darkness, unable to struggle free from it.
One day, I opened Christ’s Talks with Some Church Workers, and in the man’s fellowship attached to it, I read this passage: “…when your pagan relatives or friends drag you along to earn money and make a fortune, you say, ‘I believe in God; I want God, not fortune. If I have food and clothing, I’ll be content with that.’ The pagans say, ‘God does not say that getting rich is not good. If you make a fortune and are not hindered from believing in God in your heart, this is not a sin. With your money, you can make contributions. Isn’t that a good deed?’ Actually, these words are a temptation and a scheme of satan. If you are a pursuer of the truth, you should pray to God and sense God’s will. If you truly come to realize that getting rich is not God’s will and that only by accepting God’s work can you be saved and that getting rich cannot save you, then, if you choose God’s requirement and obey God’s will, you will stand for God’s testimony and satan will be shamed. If you listen to the devils’ words and go out to make a fortune, to earn money, you have fallen into satan’s scheme and thus lost your testimony. You should pursue to know God when satan carries out its schemes. This is the most accurate practice of standing for God’s testimony.”
Only then did I suddenly wake up. Aren’t the words of those pagan relatives of mine the schemes satan performed? When I encounter this matter, am I not needed to make a choice? I know clearly that getting rich is not God’s will and it can’t make me be saved; why then do I hesitate? I can never fall into satan’s schemes; I must imitate Peter and firmly stand for God’s testimony when satan performs its schemes. What’s more, the worldly position, fame, and money are all schemes by which satan induces man to fall. None of them is a positive thing or is in accordance with the truth, but all of them are loathsome to God. If I throw up my commission and go after money, am I not going toward the path to destruction?
O God, through your exposing I have seen that what I love is not the truth but money. I have followed you for several years but have not given my heart completely to you; I was still thinking about and planning for my own future and way of escape. If I continue like this, I will be in danger of being captured by satan at any time. O God, from now on, I will drop my aspiration after money and give satan no more chances to work on me. I only desire to, in the days to come, equip myself with more truths, pursue the transformation of my nature, perform my duty properly, and be a person who can satisfy your heart.
