In selecting or using people, I always gave priority to those who were once leaders, because I thought that long-time believers, especially those who were leaders before, were superior to new believers and it was always better to use them to do the work than to use new believers who had no working experience.
Once, I heard that there was a brother who was once a big leader but later was dismissed for some reason. I thought: Since he was once a big leader, he must be silver-tongued and good at dealing with problems. Although he is unfit for a big work, he is surely qualified to do some small work. So, I promoted him to be a church leader. After a period of time, however, he not only achieved no results in the work, but all that he reported were difficulties; he was even unable to discern and solve some very simple problems. Because of this, I felt very puzzled: He had once done some big work, but why was he now unable to settle even some small matters?
One day, in “The Principles for Using and Training People” in The Manual of the Principles for the Church Work, I read these words: “In doing everything, we should follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit doesn’t work on a person, what then can he do? The work of God’s family can be achieved only by relying on the working of the Holy Spirit. Whoever has the working of the Holy Spirit will certainly achieve good results in his work, and we should promote him and use him. Whoever loses the working of the Holy Spirit will no longer achieve any results in his work, and then we should replace him. This is the principle of cooperating with the working of the Holy Spirit. Those who serve God should act according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Such is the practice most accurate and most after God’s heart. This is also the basic principle by which God’s family uses and trains people.”
Pondering over the words in the work arrangement, I came to realize that the work of God’s family today is totally done by God Godself. People were able to do their work in the past and this was the result achieved by the working of the Holy Spirit. If one loses the working of the Holy Spirit, he won’t be able to do any work. Whether the Holy Spirit works on one does not depend on how long he has followed God, nor depend on whether he has working experience, but depends on whether he can accept the truth and actively cooperate with God. If one loses the working of the Holy Spirit, no matter how much knowledge he has or how rich his working experience is, he will not achieve any results in his work. I thought, however, that long-time believers were superior to new ones, and I even thought a person who was once a big leader and did some big work, though dismissed, would surely be able to do some minor work well. Wasn’t such a viewpoint of mine too absurd? Didn’t I deny the truth “the working of the Holy Spirit decides everything”? I only valued people’s eloquence, but did not pay attention to seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit to see whether they had the working of the Holy Spirit and whether using them conformed to the principles by which God’s family uses people. Rather, I selected and used people at will according to my own viewpoint. I was really arrogant and self-right! Only then did I see that, though having followed God for years, I had not gained any truth, I still couldn’t do the work according to the word of God or the work arrangements, and my viewpoints on things still remained unchanged. I had really grieved God!
O God, thank you for your inspiration. It has enabled me to understand that how long one has followed you and whether he has working experience are not deciding factors as to whether he is able to do the work of God’s family well; the main condition is whether he has the working of the Holy Spirit. I thank you for exposing my erroneous viewpoint by the fact and enabling me to gain some knowledge of the principles by which God’s family selects and uses people. From now on, I will take warning from this matter, correct my erroneous viewpoint, and learn to view things in light of your word. In everything, I will seek your intention, follow your guidance, and pursue to serve according to your heart, so as to let you trust me and be satisfied with me.
