731 Man Makes Too Many Demands on God
Verse 1
People can’t totally submit to or worship God.
They make unfair requests to suit their own preferences.
They expect God to be patient, always tolerant,
to communicate about the truth all of the time.
And so it seems human reason is very flawed:
Whilst they can’t submit to God’s plans and arrangements,
they impose additional requirements upon Him.
Acting like this, how can people be faithful to God?
Pre-chorus 1
How can they submit to God’s arrangements?
Even more, how can they truly love God?
Chorus
Man makes too many demands on God,
demands that cross the line.
They ask God to do things this way or that,
utterly out of their minds, minds.
Verse 2
People all have requirements for how God should love them,
how He should tolerate, watch over and protect them.
They have requirements for how God should care for them.
Yet they have no demands for their own approach to God:
how they should love Him, think of Him, have Him in their hearts,
be considerate toward Him, satisfy and worship Him.
Why don’t people press forward in these things that they should do?
Is it possible they don’t exist in their hearts?
Chorus
Man makes too many demands on God,
demands that cross the line.
They ask God to do things this way or that,
utterly out of their minds.
Bridge
The ardor some feel will not last.
They lose hope and complain at every bump in the road.
The problems of man are many,
and so few men seek the truth, or to love and satisfy God.
Pre-chorus 2
Humans are so senseless, taking the wrong stance,
yet they see themselves as especially precious.
Chorus
Man makes too many demands on God,
demands that cross the line.
They ask God to do things this way or that,
utterly out of their minds, minds.
